Understanding In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

IVF involves the union of an egg and sperm outside the body, leading to the development of embryos that are then transferred into the uterus. This assisted reproductive technology has resulted in the birth of millions of healthy children worldwide. The IVF process comprises five major steps:

Ovarian Stimulation

Daily injections of fertility medications stimulate the growth of multiple follicles. Progress is monitored through blood tests and ultrasounds. A "trigger" injection is administered to mature the eggs in preparation for retrieval.

Egg Retrieval and Sperm Collection

Approximately 36 hours after the trigger injection, eggs are retrieved using a needle guided by ultrasound. Sperm is collected through ejaculation or other methods as needed.

Fertilization and Embryo Culture

Eggs are fertilized by placing them with sperm in a dish or by injecting a single sperm directly into an egg using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The resulting embryos are cultured in the lab until ready for transfer.

Embryo Transfer

One or more embryos are placed into the uterus using a soft catheter. The procedure is similar in discomfort to a pap test. Remaining good-quality embryos can be cryopreserved for future use.

Progesterone Supplementation and Pregnancy Test

Progesterone is administered to support a developing pregnancy. A pregnancy test is performed approximately 17 days after egg retrieval, followed by an ultrasound if positive.
